Although we now know that ontogeny (individual development) does not actually recapitulate phylogeny (evolutionary transformation), contrary to Ernst Haeckel's famous dictum, the relationship between embryological development and evolution remains the subject of intense scientific interest. In the 1990s a new field, evolutionary developmental biology (or Evo-Devo), was hailed as the synthesis of developmental and evolutionary biology. In From Embryology to Evo-Devo, historians, philosophers, sociologists, and biologists offer diverse perspectives on the history of efforts to understand the links between development and evolution.

These include maxillofacial surgery, which, in the UK, is a specialty of medicine; oral surgery, which embraces maxillofacial trauma and orthognathic surgery; and dentoalveolar surgery, which is designated surgical dentistry by the General Dental Council in the UK. The first two - maxillofacial surgery and oral surgery - are the remit of specialists, whereas all dentists are expected to be competent in dentoalveolar surgery. A sound knowledge of basic surgical principles is a prerequisite to the practice of any of these areas of surgery.

The Operated Heart at Autopsy addresses the need of pathologists in practice and, especially, in training to achieve a new level of competence in dealing, at the time of autopsy, with the anatomic complexity of a heart that has undergone previous surgical treatment, whether that treatment occurred in the recent or remote past. Ready identification of post-operative morphologic changes in the heart will greatly increase the comfort level of the pathologist as he takes on the challenge of the operated heart. By drawing on lessons learned as a cardiac surgeon, the author offers reasonable guidelines to the pathologist facing this challenging task. Such guidelines include a methodical approach to assess multiple operative procedures on the heart. Previous surgery may include construction of coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG), replacement or repair of one or more heart valves, repair of one or more congenital heart anomalies, or some other procedure. Questions will arise at such an autopsy. When a past medical history is lacking, what is the best way to determine exactly what operation was done? Was the cause of death heart-related? What was the impact of the heart surgery on the cause of death? What is the importance of technical issues of the heart surgery in a given autopsy? What steps should be taken in the actual dissection of the heart…and in what order? What are the anatomic landmarks, i.e., "footprints" of a surgeon, to look for when examining the operated heart? Importantly, as the pathologist in charge of an autopsy of an individual who died during or following open-heart surgery, what do I, the pathologist, tell the cardiac surgeon who needs to know what happened? The Operated Heart at Autopsy will definitely guide the pathologist, whether a resident in training or a professional in academic or private practice, in addressing these and other related questions.

The authors have selected 600 entries that highlight selected important persons, research facilities, terms, and concepts of both these fields. There are brief biographies of the well known (Salk, Jonas) and the lesser known but important (Mil stein, Cesar); and explanations of common terms (Epidemics and pandemics), uncommon terms (Retroposons and transposable elements), and acronyms like AIDS and SCID (Severe combined immunodeficiency).
The entries are in alphabetical order with many cross references. Though there are no bibliographies with the entries, there are 13 pages of book and journal-article citations and 10 pages of Web addresses in the "Sources Consulted" section. This is followed by an 18-page "Historical Chronology" of milestones in human scientific achievement, showing how ancient (circa 10,000 B.C.E.) ideas eventually led to germ theory and the burgeoning of microbiology and immunology through 2002. The extensive, detailed general index indicates the main entries' volume and page numbers in boldface type. Sometimes the same page information is repeated in regular type, an unnecessary redundancy. Using the index one can find that the Irish potato famine is mentioned in the entry on Fungal genetics along with other similarly embedded bits of information. One important, but missing, finding aid is an index to the biographies, as browsing biographies is often a way to interest students in a discipline.

Immunocytokines represent a new class of biopharmaceuticals composed of two well known immune components – antibodies and cytokines – with the unique ability to target cytokines to the tumor microenvironment and thereby activate antitumor responses. Some or all of these innovative approaches may ultimately become the future effective immune therapy for treating malignancy.

Scott K. Powers is a Distinguished Professor and the UAA Endowed professor in the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology at the University of Florida. Powers enjoys teaching and has earned three University of Florida teaching awards. Dr. Powers’ research has focused on exercise-mediated changes in cardiac and skeletal muscle antioxidant systems and the role that these changes play in providing protection against oxidant injury. Further, he is actively investigating the mechanisms responsible for respiratory muscle weakness in patients subjected to prolonged periods of mechanical ventilation. Dr. Powers’ laboratory work has been funded by grants totaling more than five million dollars from the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, and the Florida Biomedical Research Program. This research has resulted in over 180 peer-reviewed research publications. Scott has also co-authored four college textbooks for use in exercise physiology and fitness courses. Powers is active in both the American Physiological Society and the American College of Sports Medicine. He also serves as an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Physiology-Reg. and is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Applied Physiology, the International Journal of Sports Medicine, and the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. Scott Powers received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Carson Newman College, his master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of Georgia, and a doctorate (EdD) in exercise physiology from the University of Tennessee. Powers earned a second doctoral degree (PhD) in physiology from Louisiana State University.

Edward Howley received his BS degree from Manhattan College and his MS and PhD degrees from The University of Wisconsin, Madison. He completed a one-year post-doctoral appointment at Penn State University and began his career at the University of Tennessee in 1970. He taught a variety of courses in physiology, exercise physiology and fitness testing and prescription over 36 years. He also served as an administrator of the Exercise Science program/department. He retired in 2007 and holds the rank of professor emeritus. He has received several awards for his teaching. Most of Dr. Howley’s volunteer efforts have been with the American College of Sports Medicine, where he served as president from 2002–2003. He is the Editor-in-Chief of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal, and is chair of the program planning committee for the annual ACSM Health & Fitness Summit meeting.

Structure of Enteric Neurons (Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology)

The enteric nervous system contains numerous different neuron populations which belong to three main groups, primary afferent neurons, interneurons and effector neurons. The most extensive knowledge on the different enteric neuron types is derived from studies in the guinea-pig. A significant obstacle for the transfer of this knowledge to putative equivalent enteric neurons of other species, including human, is species differences as to their morphological, chemical, physiological etc. phenotypes. Modern morphological classifications are based on the work of the Russian histologist Dogiel. Since the late 1970’s, refined morphological classifications of enteric neurons beyond Dogiel have been attempted mainly in two species, the guinea-pig and the pig. These reflect the immunohistochemical diversity of enteric neurons more precisely but are far from being complete. In this paper, we followed two aims. Firstly, we present an overview on the chemical coding of the morphological neuron types described by Stach in the pig intestine. In doing so, we have pointed out the difference between the definitions of type I neurons given by Dogiel and Stach. Secondly, we attempt to provide a basis for the morpho-chemical classification of human enteric neurons as revealed by their immunoreactivity for neurofilaments and several neuroactive substances or related markers.

Biology: Macmillan Science Library This is a great book. Great colour images. A real treasure this one.

Biology explains biological concepts, reviews the history of science, explores related fields, discusses critical issues such as embryogenesis and commercial applications of research in biology and addresses ethical issues. Careers in biology are also explored. Each fully illustrated volume contains sidebars, bibliographies, timelines, charts, a glossary and individual and cumulative indexes.

Part of the Macmillan Science Library series, Biology serves students from middle school to the undergraduate level. It provides 432 signed entries on a broad range of topics pertaining to biology, including basic concepts (Antibody, Genetic code, Nervous systems, Wetlands); history of the science (Crick, Francis; History of medicine); related fields (Agronomist, Emergency medical technician); and issues (Environmental health, Genetic control and development) as well as topics of interest to young adults, such as smoking, birth control, alcohol, and STDs. Emphasis is on molecular genetics, human physiology, and biodiversity. The articles range in length from a few paragraphs to a few pages. They appear in alphabetical order, and each concludes with see also references as well as suggestions for further reading, including Web sites.

Helpful reference tools appear in the front matter of each volume, among them a geologic timescale, a metric conversion table, and diagrams of a typical plant and animal cell. Some 550 words appear in bold type in the text and are defined in the page margins as well as in a glossary. Each of the volumes contains a topic outline and index, and a cumulative index is found in volume 4.

The eye-pleasing layout features many colorful photographs and diagrams that will appeal to casual browsers, and the articles contain more than enough information to meet the needs of students. This informative set is highly recommended and would be a useful addition to a middle- or high-school library as well as a public library. RBB
